SRINAGAR: About 400 wetlands in Jammu region are under threat of becoming extinct if measures are not taken for their preservation, a panel of experts warned today.
“Conservation of wetlands, including the famous Gharana wetland in Jammu, is very important as they are under threat of extinction. Inter-departmental coordination is necessary to save them,” Chief Wildlife Warden Jammu and Kashmir, Abdul Razzaq, said at a function organised on the conservation of wetlands here today.
Speakers maintained that numerous species of migratory birds from different parts of the world come in the wetland during different seasons and efforts need to be put in place to make their stay environmentally suitable in Gharana wetland and other water bodies. They identified the areas where measures need to be taken for ensuring proper conservation of the wetlands in Jammu city.
Regarding conservation of Gharana wetland, they equivocally voiced for collective efforts and inter departmental coordination.
Abdul Razzaq said the efforts are on to resolve the issues with the local farmers hampering the demarcation of the Gharana wetland. He said that a MoU has already been signed with WWF for conservation of the wetlands. He stressed the need for sensitizing the people living along the wetland about the importance of the water bodies and migratory birds.
While speaking on the subject Prof. Shashi Kant (Rtd), HOD, Environment Science; University of Jammu said that the efforts of conservation of Gharana wetland will bear tangible result with the protection of boundaries and proper demarcation of land. He said there are 400 wetlands in Jammu which need to be properly protected.
Roshan Jaggi said that there are 62 rare species out of 74 resident and migratory birds visiting the wetland every year. He said the core issue at Gharana wetland is encroachment, adding that the Government has constituted a committee for demarcating the boundaries to protect properly this water-body.
