BANIHAL: At least one person was killed and 18 others injured, three of them seriously, when the vehicle in which they were travelling fell into a deep gorge near Banihal in South Kashmir this afternoon, police said.
An ill-fated mini bus bearing registration Number JK 14A 0661 plying from Khari to Banihal town carrying 36 passengers fell into Bichleri River at Mile Stone 183 near Kralchihal at 1010am, on Thursday, officials said.
He said 18 passengers suffered serious injuries and were evacuated to Government Hospital Srinagar while other passengers suffered minor injuries.
On receipt of information, the official said army column of Rashtriya Rifles battalion based at Banihal under Delta Force was immediately pressed into rescue action along-with civil administration.
One Army doctor along-with Nursing assistant and ambulance was also pressed into rescue operations to provide immediate medical aid.
The timely rescue effort by civil administration in assistance with Army saved many precious lives, the official said.
According to SSP Banihal Javid Ahmed Mattoo the vehicle which was on its way to Banihal from Khari, skidded off the road and fell into the gorge near Chamalwas in Banihal tehsil.
SSP said the condition of four of the injured was critical.
