Srinagar: A major tragedy was averted by the Army at Wanabal Chowk on the Rawalpura Old Airfield Road when sentries of the Army unit deployed in the area observed a fire breaking out in the shop of a local resident. The unit immediately reacted with a team equipped with fire extinguishers and other fire-fighting equipment and, rushing to the site, managed to douse the fire.
On 25 December 2014 at around 7 AM, a fire broke out in a furniture shop at Wanabal Chowk on the road from Rawalpura to Old air field, Srinagar, approximately 3 KM from Rawalpura Chowk,. Sentries of the Army Battalion deployed in the area observed the fire and immediately sounded the alarm. While a column of 35 soldiers suitably equipped with fire extinguishers and other fire-fighting equipment was rushed to the spot, simultaneous action of informing the civil fire department and getting water bowsers from other neighboring units was taken. The fire tenders including one alongwith State Police representative also reached the site. By the time the fire tenders reached, the Army column had already localized the fire and the situation was brought under control. The fire was finally extinguished through the joint efforts of the Army, fire fighters and the villagers. The prompt and effective response of the Army team in collaboration with the Fire Department, State Police as well as the locals prevented the fire from spreading to nearby houses thus ensuring safety of life, livestock and property in the village. While a large portion of the furniture shop was burnt, there was no loss of life or livestock.
