SRINAGAR: Five militants and an army officer were killed in a fierce gunfight that erupted at Naugam sector on Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmirs Kupwara district.
The encounter broke out on the day when polling was underway in the Kupwara district. The polling, however, passed off peacefully.
An army spokesman said the infiltrators were detected by the troops leading to launch of an operation and killing of three heavily armed militants at Tut Mari Gali.
However, local news agency quoting an unnamed senior army officer, reported that five militants were killed and four army men, including two officers were injured.
All the injured were hospitalized. However, an injured Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) succumbed to his injuries, it said.
The identity of slain JCO couldnt be confirmed immediately. Army sources said a Major, identified as Anil, is among the injured soldiers and is currently admitted at armys 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar.
