Srinagar: Suspected militants shot dead a Sarpanch associated with National Conference in south Kashmirs Shopian district, police said on Monday.
In another incident, a grenade was hurled at the house of a village Numberdar in Palhallan area of north Kashmir.
Muhammad Sultan Bhat, 38, was killed shot at by militants at around 9:15 pm in Nazneenpora village of the district outside his home when the slain was travelling in car, police said. He was rushed to hospital but was declared brought dead by doctors, the police said.
A senior officer of polices Special Operation Group (SOG) told GNS that the slain was shot by three militants including a local one.
Sultan was coming to his home after meeting an independent Candidate when he was targeted, the officer said and claimed the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen is behind the killing.
Meanwhile, a grenade was hurled on the house of Mohammad Sultan Ganie, son of Ghulam Mohiuddin, resident of Raipora in Palhallan on Sunday late night, sources told GNS.
The grenade hit the roof top of the house and exploded with a big bang, creating panic among the locals they said, adding, the house suffered a minor damage in the attack.
Ganie, according to sources is affiliated with an Independent candidate Rashid Shaheen of Pattan constituency, who along with his activists had withdrawn his support from NC earlier this year.
A police official, however, said the explosion was caused due to cracker.
