Gunfight rages in Kulgam

SRINAGAR:  A fierce gunfight broke out between militants and government forces in Chanigam village of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

A police official said that acting on specific information regarding the presence of militants in village Chanigam Frisal in the district, police, army’s 1 Rashtriya Rifles Unit and 18 Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force launched a cordon and search operation.

He said the search party of forces was fired upon by militants triggering an encounter.

Sources said that two militants associated with Laskhar-e-Taiba are believed to be trapped in a residential house.

They said the forces have suspended the operation in the area till morning. (GNS)
