After airstrikes on Islamic State (IS) targets in Iraq now the US has extended airstrikes on Syria as well. For their attacks inside Syria the US has organized for itself the support of a couple of US-supported Arab regimes Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, Jordan besides Turkey. In addition, the US Congress has again decided to keep up its support for so-called moderate rebels in Syria via the already existing two secret command centers; One in Jordan which is staffed by military officials from 14 Western and Arab countries including Israel that is coordinating the operations of the rebels in southern Syria; Second while the operations of the jihadis in northern Syria are coordinated by similar command centers and bases in Turkey. But as a matter of fact there is no “Free Syrian Army”; there are no “moderate” jihadis left in Syria. They are all fighting for the IS Caliph or for al-Qaida a handpicked by the perpetrators of Arab Spring and Regime change that is now hitting back on them. And still the Obama administration extracted a Congressional OK to train and weaponize “moderate rebels” in Syria which already shows that the whole operation has double standards.
The airstrikes of US and its supporters on Syria are opening up a new conflict and raise questions about the implied but hidden objectives of the action. There is the principled question why US did not secure its operation by asking Syria for permission for the airstrikes. But here comes the second, hidden US aim into play: asking the Assad government would have legitimized it and the second aim of the air strikes is to finish the unfinished agenda to bring down the Assad government which has been the original objective of the US thus killing two birds with one stone. We know that ISIS operated in the Syrian theater since August 2011 and its sabotage activities against the Assad regime were fully supported by the US’ allies in the region: The US blacklisted al-Nusra Front (ISIS after April 2013) only in December 2012. Thus, from August 2011 to December 2012, the US government tolerated and indirectly supported ISIS in Syria where it “liberated” one-third of Syrian territory in the north and east from the clutches of the US’ arch-rival: the Assad regime. Another development points into the same direction: an Israeli, made in USA Patriot missile shot a Syrian Su-24 which had allegedly “violated” Israeli air space over the Golan Heights. It is a back-door preamble to bombing Bashar al-Assad and his forces.
