Srinagar: Coaching Centers Association of Kashmir has criticized the central government for completely ignoring the needs of Kashmiri students and playing a partisan role by establishing prestigious IIT in Jammu and nothing in Kashmir.
According to a statement , the association said that Jammu already has the sole Government Engineering college of the state whereas Kashmir has none. We had one government engineering college which was converted into NIT and we were deprived of 50 percent of seats, said G N Var, chairman CCA. In addition to it Jammu has two private engineering colleges and now they walk away with IIT too.
The association accused the government of playing politics with education. Jammu is well linked to rest of India and their students can go anywhere for education whereas Kashmir is a landlocked place with no access to institutes of quality education, said Var. Besides Kashmir has much higher population than Jammu and as per rules IIT should have been established here.
The association said that Muslims are being pushed out of quality institutes due to such policies. Our reservations like RBA are not considered at national level and all those seats are bagged by Scheduled Caste category in hindus, said Var. Besides this year around 1000 Kashmiri students were denied chance to appear in IIT exams as the conducting agency didnt consider Kashmir winter session as current years session. There has been no effort to compensate students for such problems.
The association feared that going by the current turn of events Kashmiri students are being pushed to corner. No doubt ruling government gets votes in Jammu but that doesnt mean Kashmir has to be punished, said Var. When centre announced central university for Kashmir, people in Jammu protested and made government to announce another central university for their region by even sacrificing IIM.
The association demanded that centre plays evenly with Kashmir too and compensate the region by establishing IIT, IIM or other prestigious institute in the valley. We are in talks with people from all walks of life particularly in education sector, said Var. If government does not budge from its partisan policy we may be forced to protest against the injustice.
