Srinagar :At least five women protesters were injured in police action when they were protesting against the water scarcity in civil lines areas of summer capital here.
Witnesses said after announcement in a local mosque; the residents, mostly women, of Sarai Bala and Maharaja Bazar took to Airport Road near Naaz Cinema and blocked one of the busiest roads of the city. The women chanted slogans against administration and demanded end to water scarcity in the area. They were also demanding that local Member of Legislative Assembly should come on the spot, witnesses said.
They said in order to pacify protesters, a contingent of police reached the spot. However, the protesters continued their protest and refused to disperse, witnesses said.
They said the police resorted to baton charge which created chaos in the area. As a result of police action, nearly five women sustained injuries, witnesses said.
A police official said that the protesters held protest during crucial morning time when school children, employees and patients have to reach their destination. They created problems for common people and after which women police was who dispersed them, he said. The official said the protesters also pelted stones on police men in which three cops sustained injuries. The official, however, denied baton charge.
Earlier, the protesters said that they are facing enormous difficulties due to water scarcity in the month of Holy Ramadhan. Despite repeated pleas and protests, the authorities are not paying any heed, they said.
