SRINAGAR: The locals and relatives of a woman, who died under mysterious circumstances at Ganderbal late Monday evening, staged a protest demonstration and accused the victim’s husband and in-laws of killing her for dowry.
The victim Babli Jan, 23, wife of Muhammad Ashraf Qureshi resident of Gulabpora Lar in Ganderbal was brought to a nearby Health Care Centre by her in-laws in critical condition where doctors declared her brought dead. The victim according to the doctors was pregnant who bore torture marks.
The locals and parents of the deceased woman said that she was allegedly beaten up by her husband and in-laws . Police has registered a case and arrested the accused cop after the family members and locals staged a massive protest.
The family members of the deceased woman alleged that her husband working in Jammu and Kashmir Police Department as SPO (An irregular and underpaid policeman hired for counterinsurgency or other security purposes) frequently used to torture her for not getting Rs 2 lakh from her parents which according to the family members he needed to get regularized in the department.
“My sister was tortured physically and mentally to bring more dowry and other luxurious items from last few months but we failed to meet their demands due to our limited resources, CNS quoted brother of the victim who hails from Argam Bandipora .
Incharge Station House Officer, Police Station, Lar Ganderbal confirmed the arrest of victim’s husband . We have registered a case and are waiting for the post mortem report, he said adding that body of the deceased bore torture marks which indicates that she had been beaten to pulp.
