Kishtwar: The reports of a minor girl’s gang rape has stirred up tensions in the Kishtwar district of Muslim dominated Chenab Valley. Protestors on Tuesday took to streets afer a 13-year-old girl, from an ethnic Gujjar family, was allegedly gang raped in Drabshallah area of the hilly region.
Quoting police sources a CNS report said a class 6 girl student was allegedly dragged, by Sudesh Kumar son of Karan Singh resident of village Shandri Drabshala and Nitin Chand son of Saroop Chand resident of village Gujjar Khotan Drabshala, to a nearby secluded place and subjected to torture before being raped by the duo. As the news about the rape spread in the area, hundreds of people blocked the Kishtwar-Jammu road and demanded punishment for the accused, eyewitnesses said. Angry protesters reportedly threw stones on vehicles and tried to ransack shops and official spaces but were later dispersed by the police action.
According to the top Police official of Kishtwar, Sanjay Kotwal, one of the accused Nitin Chand has been arrested while the hunt has been launched to nab the other one. We have registered a formal case against the accused and investigation has been taken up on fast track basis, he said.
