Srinagar:Though the meeting between Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan is being seen as a positive sign in the relations of two neighbors, there is unlikely to be any substantial progress in immediate future as far as resolution of Kashmir issue is considered, thus belief academics here.
As the engagements go ahead, the trade and commerce will gain more importance, Prof Gul Wani, who teaches Political Science at University of Kashmir, told .
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief on Tuesday met at Hyderabad House in New Delhi with later hoping to overcome the legacy of mistrust and misgivings.
There is something important at this time that both Modi and Nawaz Sharief have an economic mindset and they are not obsessed with politics of conflict so much as their predecessors were so that may give them a leverage to drive bilateral peace process, Prof Wani said, adding, May be with the passage of time, if the relationship goes well then other difficult and thorny issues that are their between the two countries can also be taken up and will definitely be taken up.
Actually, he said, the question is if things move forward and the composite dialogue begins.
I think one of its (composite dialogue) important areas is Jammu and Kashmir issue, Wani said, underling that at the moment, both the countries will focus on the issues which benefit them.
Prof. Noor Muhammad Baba, who also teaches Political Science at Kashmir University, believes there will not be immediate progress on Kashmir as the relations of both the countries were almost frozen. Now they will begin taking and in the long run there is possibility of progress on the Kashmir but not immediately, he said, adding, I wont say today they have met and after a month or two, they will be solving Kashmir. That is not correct.
Prof Baba also underscored that focus of the countries at the moment is their relations particularly developing more cordial and more stable atmosphere for mutual relationships.
They want an atmosphere in which they can begin trade and they can begin talks and gradually create an atmosphere to find a way, a frame work in which different issues that they face, Baba said.
He said for resolving Kashmir they need to have high degree of confidence in coming to a resolution on Kashmir.
Is yet to come to any conclusion whether there would be immediate progress on Kashmir or not as Modi has used the occasion for projecting himself as the moderate who is digestible even to Pakistan whereas Nawaz Sharief has only gone with promises, Dr. Sheikh Showkat Hussain, who teaches International Law at Central University of Kashmir, told .
It is yet to be seen whether those promises will materialize or will remain just the illusions like the ones made by Dr. Manmohan Sing during last ten years.
