SRINAGAR: The Prime Minister Narendar Modis scheduled meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Shariff on the sidelines of swearing-in ceremony on Monday got a mixed response in Kashmir with some terming it a good start and some a misplaced euphoria.
With some youth hoping that the meet will break the ice somehow between the two rival nations, several others while giving wide berth to the issue stated that peace without victory can never be termed as the lasting peace.
Yes why not. It is a good start. Perhaps Modi wants to give an impression that being a politician and then being a Prime Minster is different. It is also a clear signal to the world that India now wants peace and good relations with Pakistan, said a group of university students.
Another group of students said, Before commenting over anything, we need to look into the fact that what actually we are getting out of it. All SARC countries are being invited to Modis oath ceremony and Pakistan is one among them. What miracles Pakistan is going to show to the people now as it did nothing in the past?
The tea stalls of the summer capital, considered as the hubs of the political discussions, all day had a discussion on Modi- Sharief meet in New Delhi. The people there, mostly the senior citizens said correspondent that the meet could be a signal of what is happening between the two countries- it could be either good or bad. What we need to do is to watch the situation and carry on with our daily work, said Mohammad Abas-a north Kashmir resident. Another person sitting beside him had a contrary opinion about the meet. He also took a jibe at Kashmirs pro-freedom camp, asking them why they remained silent over Shrief not inviting them to Delhi. It is beyond my understanding that why our leaders are still praising Modi- Sharif meet when even they were sidelined for the first time by the Pakistan, said Syed Mohammad Qasim. He concluded his comment- stating that he is more concerned over the worse condition of roads than the Indo-Pak thaw.
A local vendor in the old city, Riyaz Ahmad while commenting over the Modi- Sharief meet said that the present day politics is beyond his understanding but he prays for the Kashmir resolution. Mohammad Ramzan, a shopkeeper in the old city said correspondent that the meet will never help Kashmir to get resolved and also the people should not get swayed away by such waves. Our own men are thieves here, what hope can we have on others . Unless a far sighted leadership gets emerged in Kashmir, the peace will always remain elusive.
The Modi- Sharief meet also remained a hot topic on social networking sites like facebook and twitter in Kashmir. Some netizens while expressing their opinions over the issue stated that one must not expect anything from the meet and that the fate of the nations never gets decided on the dining tables, serving many dishes. Both PMs have a primary interest of their own countries. Kashmir or Kashmiri is a secondary one. Both play romance with the sentiment of Kashmir & have enough Kashmiri around to please both parties of the dispute, reads the status of one facebook user.
Another one stated that keeping hopes in Modi- Shariff meet is like opening up a mirror shop in the area of blinds and then, on a praying mat, hoping and praying for immense success of the new business.
