Prisoner dies in police custody

Srinagar, May 17: Police on Saturday said that a prisoner serving detention in Central Jail Srinagar last night died after he ‘fell ill’.

A police official told GNS that Mushtaq Ahmad Gilkar hailing from Koolipora Khanyar, who was serving detention in Central Jail from last five years, fell ill “He was rushed to Rainawari Hospital where from he died,” the spokesman added.

The official said that he was arrested under FIR number 23/09 under section 8/20 NDPS Act. “Police has taken cognizance of the matter,” the official added.

Refuting police claims, the family of Mushtaq said he didn’t die due to heart attack. His brother, Aijaz Ahmad Gilkar alleged that the deceased was ‘murdered’. “The Jail Superintendent killed him by thrashing him last night. The other detainees are witness of the incident how he was taken away by Jail Superintendent and thrashed ruthlessly,” he told GNS.

He said his brother was in good health and it is ‘impossible’ that heart attack caused his death. (GNS)
