SRINAGAR: Hurriyat Conference (M) Tuesday reiterated that demilitarization of entire Kashmir including Tossa Maidan has been the foremost demand of Hurriyat and that the conglomerate has repeatedly declared this stand that Jammu and Kashmir was human and a political issue which should be solved through political means in order to end the uncertainty in the region.
According to a statement issued here the Hurriyat said that besides working for the demilitarization of the Tosa Maidan and other populated areas as well as tourist resorts of Kashmir, the purpose of the present campaign is also to continue the fight against the ever going on increase in the military concentration in the length and breadth of Kashmir through a nexus between the state government and the Army.
Instead of looking at Tosa Maidan through the prism of commerce and tourism, the spokesman said that this issue of grave importance should be seen as a human and political one. The present campaign thus requires co-operation and co-ordination from all sections of the society. Expressing regret and concern over some people who are calling meetings to plan construction of hotels and restaurants at Tosa Maidan while overlooking the huge loss of life and human pain and miseries of people of the area over the past 50 years because of being an artillery firing exercise range and laboratory for the test of other lethal weapons. The spokesman said such groupings and people associated with them can never be the well wishers of public.
Spokesman further stated that some retired government servants and government salaried persons, were terming Tosa Maidan as apolitical and by doing so they were actually diminishing the importance and sensitivities attached to this issue of grave concern. He said that such people were engaged in a nefarious design to divert the direction of protest campaign initiated by the APHC.
Spokesman stated that it was highly unfortunate that Tosa Maidan which is still under the occupation of Army and the people of Tosa Maidan still suffering due to militarization, but some elements with vested interest have got their maps prepared to construct guest houses and restaurants there. He said that some self-styled civil society members, completely ignoring the sacrifices of common Kashmiris and bereft of any substantial strategy to provide relief to people, were engrossed discussing the guest houses and restaurants proposed to be constructed in the meadow of death.
The spokesman said that the people of Kashmir have been going through enormous difficulties and torment for the decades now and in such a situation the elements with vested interest and personal agenda would not be allowed to impose themselves on the situation.
He stated that on this sensitive stage of history, it is prudent that people should desist from making statements which strengthen designs of Government-Army nexus and anti people plans of the rulers.
