SRINAGAR: Hundreds of people blocked a vital highway for hours today against the non-availability of electricity transformer in Ajas area of the northern district Bandipore.
Witnesses said that hundreds of Ajas residents took to streets and held strong demonstration against the power development department. The protesters blocked the critical Srinagar-Bandipore highway since early morning till afternoon. The protesters while chanting slogans against the department demanded transformer for the area which was taken for repair and never returned.
Muhammad Yaseen, one of the protesters said that the since twenty days the area is without transformer. He said: The transformer installed in the area was without oil and we called on department to fill the oil before the transformer stopped working. We dropped the application but they told us that the oil is not available at Division. Finally, they took away the transformer to Sumbal. Now, they are not returning it.
Protesters said the power department was delaying the delivery of the transformer.
The protesters didnt allow any vehicle to pass and the protests caused inconvenience to the commuters on the highway.
Later, senior police officials arrived at the spot and pacified the protesters who ended their sit-in on the highway.
Reports said that a transformer was installed in the area.
