SRINAGAR: Thousands of passengers were caught in a nasty traffic jam for the whole day Thursday on Srinagar-Jammu highway after it got closed for traffic early on Thursday.
Hundreds of vehicles got stranded on the highway after a driver abandoned his lorry on the middle of the road at Patnitop after it developed a technical snag.
The traffic jam stretched from Patnitop to Kud, eyewitnesses said adding the vehicles were Srinagar bound as it was Jammu-Srinagar traffic today. Passengers including men, women and children had a harrowing experience as they spent the whole day on the highway in their vehicles. Passengers alleged that not a single government official visited the spot from 7 am to 4 pm.
I along with my family members am stranded near Patnitop from 7 am. It is 4 pm now and not a single government official has visited the spot to make arrangements for repairing or removing the lorry, said Ghulam Hassan Mir on phone.
Another passenger alleged that traffic police had allowed vehicles to ply from Srinagar to Jammu though it was one way traffic on Thursday from Jammu and Srinagar. This two way traffic created mess on the highway and became cause of great inconvenience for the passengers, said another passenger.
SP traffic National Highways, Dr Haseeb Mughal said that a lorry had developed some technical snag and the road was cleared at 4:10 pm. He denied reports that any vehicle was allowed to ply from Srinagar to Jammu on Thursday.
