Cricket: Youth stabbed, 3 army men held

SRINAGAR: Enraged by a group of locals cheering Pakistani side during the Asia Cup India-Pak match, some army personnel thrashed and then stabbed a youth in the ski resort of Gulmarg on Sunday night.

Police Monday arrested five persons, including three army men, posted at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports, Gulmarg, for stabbing one Muhammad Yousuf Reshi.

The incident took place when a group of trainees and soldiers were watching the crunch game in Hotel Sahara. 

Official sources said scuffle broke out between armymen and few civilians soon after the match ended.

“During the scuffle, one of the army troopers hit a youth with a sharp edged knife injuring him seriously,” sources added. 

Sources said as locals were busy celebrating Pakistan’s victory; the armymen called Reshi in their room and beat him to pulp before stabbing him. 

Reshi is a resident of Beerwah, Budgam has been working as an instructor in the institute. 

He was immediately rushed to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura whetre he is undergoing treatment.

Official sources identified the detained army men as Havaldar Jitender Singh, Niak Sonam and Naik Hajari Lal. The arrested civilians were identified as  Lakshman of Udhampur and Kuldip Singh of Baderwah.

Meanwhile, police have registered a case under FIR No. 2/2014 under section 242 and 323 at Gulmarg police station.
