Car lifters escape from police custody

SRINAGAR: Three persons arrested on charges of thefts escaped from police custody in Srinagar on Tuesday night prompting the police top brass to initiate an inquiry into the incident.

Mohsin Khan of Sheikh Pora, Budgam, Haroon Najar and Reyaz Ahmad, both residents of Zaldager Srinagar, escaped from police station Soura late last night.

The trio, police said, were taken into custody in connection with the vehicle theft cases taking place in the central Kashmir.

Sources said that following the escape police on Wednesday launched raids at various locations in Srinagar and Budgam to nab the trio.

Incharge Superintendent of Police, Hazratbal, Aijaz Ahmed said that the department has initiated an inquiry into the escape.

“We are investigating the circumstances under which the trio managed to escape from police lock up,” Aijaz said, while refusing to divulge further details.

“Any comment into the case can hamper the police investigation,” he said.
