Police refutes airport attack reports

SRINAGAR: Police on Tuesday denied as unfounded news carried by a section of national media that five militants and over ground workers (OGWs) of Lashker-e-Toiba arrested by it were planning an attack on Srinagar airport.

Addressing a Press Conference here, Superintendent of Police Budgam, Irshad Ahmed said that while the arrested were involved in the killing of Station House Officer Chadoora recently, “investigation did not reveal that they were planning an attack on Srinagar airport.”

Quoting sources, a section of the national media had claimed that LeT module had planned an attack on Srinagar airport.

Regarding the SHO’s killing, SP Irshad Ahmad during investigation it surfaced that the group, operating in the area, was involved in the attack on December 2 last.

“During the investigation of the killing of SHO Chadoora Shabir Ahmad on 2nd December, 2013, it surfaced that a group of LeT militants operating in the area was involved in the killing of the SHO”, he said.

“Three militants Ashiq Hussain Bhat son of Ghulam Rasool, Reyaz Ahmad Dar son of Ghulam Rasool resident of Panzan and Basharat Ahmad Mir son of Late Abdul Khaliq resident of Munpapay were arrested while the fourth one Umar @ Zahid was killed in an encounter in village Hushroo on 25-12-2013 with police and 53-RR”, SP said.

“During the questioning of the arrested militants, it transpired that four more persons namely Mohammad Yousuf Lone son of Sona-Ullah Lone resident of Gadoora, Pulwama (absconding), Abdul Hamid Malik son of Ali Mohammad Malik resident of Raipora, Chadoora, Manzoor Ahmad Najar son of Ghulam Qadir resident of Panzan, Lateef Rather @ Abu Muslim son of Habib-Ullah resident of Badipora, Chadoora (absconding) were part of the conspiracy”, he said, adding that the conspiracy was hatched in the 3rd week of November, 2013 by LeT Div. Commander Qasim, Basharat Ahmad Mir @ Ustad Umar, Lateef Ahmad Rather, Reyaz Ahmad Dar and Umar resident of Pakistan and an unidentified person.

SP said that acting upon this conspiracy, recee was carried out twice. Finally, on 2nd December, 2013 attack was carried out by Umar, a Pakistani national, Basharat, Reyaz and Aashiq.

“Further investigations revealed that the arrested militants were also involved in a variety of conventional criminal acts ranging from extortion to murder cases to NDPS cases. Besides, Basharat Ahmad, Ashiq, Yousuf and Hamid have also been found involved in duping innocent persons to provide them government jobs and have duped them of huge money from general public. They also used militants to silence the people who were demanding money back”, SP added.
