SRINAGAR: A grenade blast created chaos in the Sopore town, while some unverified gunshots created panic in Hyderpora area of Srinagar Saturday.
Sources said that the personnel belonging to 179 battalion CRPF were engaged in a mock drill at their post in SBI, Sopore when a grenade fell from the hand of a trooper around 9:15 am today and exploded in a drain. No one was injured in the blast.
The explosion led to chaos in the busy Main Chowk. Many people ran towards the safer places fearing it to be a militant attack.
Meanwhile, panic also gripped Hyderpora area of Srinagar after some gunshots were heard this morning.
Reports said that road opening parties of CRPF and army heard some gunshots around 1:55 pm and immediately took positions along the volatile stretch. The forces told the police that some unknown gunmen in a car fired two rounds at their patrol before fleeing. Later, senior police, CRPF and army officials reached the spot to ascertain the facts.
Locals, however, denied that any firing took place.
A scooter which had a damaged silencer caused the gunfire like sound. The forces presumed it to be gunshots and took positions along the highway, Mohammad Atif, a local told a news agency
A senior police official, who visited the spot said that no clue was found in the area that suggested that firing incident had taken place.
