Fierce encounter rages on in Handwara

SRINAGAR: A fierce encounter  broke out between militants and army at Rajwar in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district Monday.

Reports reaching here said that acting on a tip off, a joint team of Army’s 21 Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operation Group (SOG) of police cordoned off Ganie Mohala of Rajpora in Rajwar sector of Handwara on Monday evening.

As the joint team started combing operations, the militants hiding in the area opened fire upon forces, triggering a gun-battle, reports said.

An unknown militant was killed during the gunfight which is still going on. Top LeT commander among two militants believed to be under trap, reports said.

Meanwhile, extra deployment of 30 RR and 6RR were rushed to the area to assist the joint team in carrying out the operation.

A defence spokesperson said that on the basis of specific intelligence input army’s 21 RR and police cordoned off the area at 2 p m today and around 4:15 militants holed inside a residential house opened heavy fire upon the joint team. “The fire was retaliated ensuing a fierce gunbattle.”
