SRINAGAR: Nowhatta and its adjacent areas of old city observed a complete shutdown against the arrest of a youth on Thursday. Family members of the youth alleged that police picked up Mushtaq Ahmed Shiekh son of Ghulam Mohi-u-Din resident of Syedpora, Nowhatta during a raid from his residence.
A police party from police station Nowhatta raided our house and arrested my brother. We are seven sisters and Mushtaq was our lone brother. My brother is not a stone pelter but was working as a conductor to Tata 407 (JK04-7604), one of the sisters of the arrested youth told CNS.
She said that Mushtaq Ahmed was booked by police under PSA in 2008 and was released after four years in 2012. Now he was acting as a conductor, earning bread and butter for us, she said.
All the seven sisters of the arrested youth came on roads and blocked the traffic demanding immediate release of their brother. All the shops remained shut against this arrest in Nowhatta and its adjacent areas.
Reports said that scores of youth came on roads and resorted to stone-pelting. Police use tear smoke shells to disperse the protestors.
A police official said that the accused was arrested for his active role in stone-pelting.
