SHOPIAN: With the businesses resuming after two days elsewhere in the Valley curfew remained in force for the second day in this South Kashmir district with reports of stone pelting and sit-in protests from several areas. Meanwhile police today claimed to have identified the fourth slain person and declared three others innocent as they had no militancy records at all.
According to reports, protests were held in Gagren, Alyalpora and Baba Mohalla where youth took to streets and clashed with the police and CRPF.
Complete Shutdown was observed in Pulwama, Kulgam and upper reaches of Shopian area with transport, business establishments and schools shut for the third day against the killings. Eyewitnesses said that a large gathering of youth marched towards Gagren camp in defiance of curfew and staged sit-in protests outside it. They (protesters) were demanding immediate removal of the CRPF camp.
Shakoor Malik, a resident of the area said, We were protesting peacefully and were demanding stern punishment to killers, but CRPF personnel resorted to intense tear gas shelling which resulted in injuries to several youth.
The injured persons were rushed to SMSH hospital, Shakoor added.
Here, a police spokesperson said they were investigating the matter.
Deputy commissioner Shopian, Bashir Ahmad said that curfew would remain in force till situation improves. He said authorities were monitoring the situation and allowing people to visit hospital and other emergency services. DC said Hajis from the Shopian area were also facilitated by administration to reach Haj House, Bemina.
Pertinently, four persons were killed by 14 Battalion CRPF on Saturday when Kashmir was observing shutdown against Zubin Mehta musical concert.
