SRINAGAR: Army Wednesday claimed that it arrested a top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, who was evading arrest for last 18 years, along with his two companions from Ajas area of Bandipore district.
The militant commander, according to Army, was the longest surviving militant who has been active in North Kashmir for past 18 years.
Though all the army officials refused to divulge the information about the operation, one of them said on condition of anonymity that a joint column of 13 RR personnel and SOG Bandipore cordoned off Bazipora, Gujarpati area in Ajas Bandipore following inputs that militant commander Talib Lali along with his companions was present there.
Unconfirmed reports said that militant commander fired some shots to evade arrest, however, the swift action of Army did not allow him to escape their dragnet. He along with two companions Rashid Lali and Showkat Dar were arrested. Reports said that relatives and neighbours of the militant commander resented the action of the Army and they raised anti-India slogans.
Soon after their arrest they were taken to Ajas Camp where from they were shifted to 13 RR Headquarters located at Manasbal. They are being questioned, an Army official said adding that some arms and ammunition was recovered by Army on the spot of the arrest.
A top Army official said that Lali was active in Kashmir since 1996 and he had never been arrested so far. Its really a big achievement for us, he said. Security officials said the arrested guerrilla commander was in ‘category A’, meaning that he carried a reward of nearly Rs 5 lakh on his head.
