DC, SSP visit Mirwaiz, convey decision to him, no curfew on Tuesday
SRINAGAR: The State Government has decided not to allow Hurriyat Conference (M) rally in the city Eidgah on Tuesday. The rally was announced as part of 23rd death anniversaries of Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone.
While unidentified militants killed Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq in his Nigeen residence on May 21 in 1990, Lone was killed during a rally in Eidgah held to commemorate Mirwaizs death anniversary on May 21 in 2002.
Sources said that Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Farooq Ahmad Shah and Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) City, Ashiq Bukhari visited Mirwaz Umars Nigeen residence on Monday and urged him not to go ahead with his proposed march. They (DC and SSP) told Mirwaiz that he was under house arrest and shouldnt make any attempt to hold the rally in Eidgah as there were apprehensions of law and order problems, they said.
Media Advisor to Mirwaiz, Shahid-ul-Islam confirmed that the DC and SSP visited Hurriyat (M) chairmans Nigeen residence at 4 PM on Monday. They conveyed government decision of not allowing any rally on Tuesday, he said.
Meanwhile, sources said that government will impose curfew like restrictions in five police station areas in old city on Tuesday to thwart the proposed Hurriyat (M) rally.
However, DC Srinagar said that there will be no curfew in any part of the city on Tuesday.
Mirwaiz Placed Under House Arrest
Mirwaiz Umer Farooq was earlier placed under house arrest Monday, a day before the group has called for a march to the Eidgah here.
The Mirwaiz’s movements have been restricted to maintain law and order, a police official said.
“Such marches and rallies have often turned violent in the past. We will not take any chances with the law and order situation in the city or elsewhere in the state”, a top official said.
