SRINAGAR: Traders Association Batamalu Saturday staged a protest against Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) for its alleged role in supporting the Sumo Drivers who have occupied the car parking space in front of their shopping complex.
Protestors said that the space was meant for parking of the cars of the shopkeepers and the customers visiting the shopping complex, but sumo drivers have occupied it now and as a result their business is badly hit.
Amid anti-SMC slogans, the protesters demanded immediate evacuation of the Sumo stand from the spot.
Some Sumo drivers have illegally occupied our parking lot for the purpose of running Sumo services. This has ruined our business completely. We are paying thousands of rupees as rent for our shops. If these Sumo drivers will not evacuate the parking lot, we will face starvation, one of the protestors said.
When contacted Commissioner, SMC Dr G.N.Qasba said that he had called these shopkeepers but they didnt turn up. I was waiting for them but they didnt show up. Let them come and we will hopefully sort out the issue, he said.
