Ismail Shahs Family Protests In Lal Chowk, Threatens Hunger Strike
SRINAGAR: The family of Qazigund-resident Muhammad Ismail Shah, who was killed in Central Jail on Sunday, held vehement protests in Lal Chowk here, accusing the police of causing his death.
We strongly believe that my father was killed by the Central Jail police, If they did not kill him, why are they hiding the post-mortem report, Shahs daughter, Shaheena, demanded.
The family said that the police statement issued on the day of Shahs death was misleading.
This weekend, the police had said that Shah, in jail since September 2009 on murder charges, had been hit by brick by another inmate, Ghulam Hassan Malik of Shopian.
Shahs daughters held up traffic in the busy area by throwing themselves on the road along with other relatives, and several of the protestors were taken into custody by the police.
Chanting slogans against the police, they demanded that the chief minister order an inquiry into Shahs death.
They threatened to go on a hunger strike if what they described as their fathers real killers were not nabbed forthwith.
On April 6, we came to know through our relative that my father had been admitted to the SKIMS. We immediately rushed there and saw that my father was hit in the head and was bleeding profusely even hours after doctors had declared him dead, another of Shahs daughters, Kulsoom, said.
The police assured us that they will look into the matter and nab the culprit, but a week has passed, and no official has spoken another word to the family over the case, he said.
