Why Can We No Longer Love?

“You will not enter paradise until you have faith. And you will not complete your faith until you love one another.” Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W)

We are born with an immense capacity to love because perhaps love is what God made the world with. Love comes in many forms. Each form of love is like an angel, beautiful and divine! It takes the shape of compassion, care, devotion, brotherhood, kindness, mercy, piety, affection, friendship and tenderness and these are the things that make life worth living. Take them away, hell will be here! Love it is that runs the world, a tool which God uses to take care of us all. It is love that surrounds you in the darkest of times, love that is the food and warmth during the worst days. Love is also the tear that trickles for someone else. Love, the ache that clutches the heart to see a beloved in pain, it is the shriek that escapes and remains in the air on the death of a beloved. Love is then the crushing force that breaks your spine.

Love is tremendous; a volcano, it erupts, it devastates. At the same time love is the beautiful tree growing inside our hearts and which brings floods of solace. To be loved is a blessing and to love back for the unconditional adoration is a bigger blessing still.

Love comes to us naturally; it runs in our veins and resides in our bones. But often do I wonder why people cannot love? Why are they incapable of living with this wonderful blessing? Why do they mime their soul so much that they no longer feel anything? Is money more important than your own heart; a heat that links you to your soul, your basic identity? Today we give not a single thought about others; people cheat, hurt and even kill for small material gains. A son no longer cares for a father, a brother hates his own brother, a neighbor is technically a nonexistent relation and friends are friends till they are useful! Pretending to love till your work is done is what we find easiest.

Loving people in expectation of gain is not love, loving them for selfish interest is not love. Love is free from all bonds, limits. It knows no rules. It is there formless, limitless; it is like air, fire, water. To try to trap it, cage it, hide it and suppress it, is impossible.

By not sharing this treasure, we diminish it; we limit the boundaries of our soul. Each attempt we do makes us less human and thus for little gain we deprive ourselves of the bounties of life. We often say adults are more realistic than children; for me they are merely materialistic. A realistic person would never keep his compassion at bay when it could be a reason for him to go to Heaven.

“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” Mother Teresa

I used to think everyone could love until I realized that I was wrong. People might have evolved into super humans but more intelligent or not, we sure are losing human traits fast!

Why can’t people love?
Why is it that the heart
Has changed in nature?
That a heart is no longer a heart
For cash, you get love today
For love, nothing at all!

Do not pity the dead, pity the living, and, above all those who live without love.” ? J.K. Rowling
