SRINAGAR: Most of the street lights installed by Power Development Department (PDD) and Municipal Corporation in old city are defunct which causes a lot of inconvenience to people residing in Idgah, Waniyar, Safakadal, Barthana, Noorbagh and Nowhatta areas.
The inhabitants have castigated the PDD and SMC for failing to repair the defunct streetlights in the city.
According to the residents, the streetlights were installed by the Power Development Department and Srinagar Municipal Corporation few months ago and as soon as they were installed they became defunct. Most of the streetlights installed in the lanes are lying defunct due to which the pedestrians are facing lot of inconvenience after the dusk, the locals told CNS.
An elderly person Ghulam Rasool Najar said that Sodium Vapour lights installed in Idgah grave yard are not working. At some places due to unknown reasons SMC has installed these lights not on roads but in yards of some houses which also not work, he said and added that each sodium vapour light costs Rs 8000 and near about 300 such lights were installed in different areas of Srinagar city but all have become defunct after their installation.
Mohammad Irfan, a resident of Bangar Mohalla, Safa Kadal said that high mass lights worth lakhs were installed by PDD but they too have become defunct after their installation and now the department doesnt care to repair them. Despite apprising the concerned officials about the issue, nothing substantial has been done so far, he said.
SMC Commissioner G.N.Qasba told CNS that the street lights will be repaired soon. I will look into the matter. Let the delegation convey to me where is the problem and accordingly I will send a team a repair them, he said. CNS
