SRINAGAR: Villagers from the Budgam district held angry protests here on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of their sarpanch, deputy sarpanch and a panch, saying they belonged to the same family and had embezzled lakhs of rupees.
Hailing from Kutbal in the Chadoora block, the protestors said that the father-son-daughter trio had committed frauds by allotting large sums of money to ineligible persons.
Because of the Rs 13 lakh fraud, a central team had recommended the dismissal of the sarpanch Muhammad Aslam Thakar, but the state government has yet to act because he is closely linked to the National Conference, a protestor Mushtaq Ahmad said.
Thakars father, Abdul Ahad, is the deputy sarpanch in the village, while his sister is a panch, protestors said.
