SRINAGAR: The chairman of the JKLF, Muhammad Yasin Malik, was detained by the police along with several of his associates while heading for Pulwama, his party said.
Malik was intercepted near the southern township of Pampore, and taken into custody, it said.
The JKLF chief was accompanied by Noor Muhammad Kalwal, Mushtaq Ajmal, Basheer Ahmad Kashmiri and Muhammad Shahid.
The group was heading for Pulwama to inquire into the welfare of the victims of forces firing in the town on Friday, and express solidarity with families which had lost their homes in a gun battle between troops and militants in nearby Bubgam.
The group had also planned to pay tribute to the two militants slain in the Friday encounter, the JKLF said, condemning the arrest of Malik and his associates as state terrorism, anti-democratic and unwarranted curbs on peoples movement.
