SRINAGAR: Condemning the forces firing on civilians in Pulwama this week, both Hurriyat factions have called for a protest shutdown on Monday, with Mirwaiz Umar Farooq demanding troop pullout from towns and cities, and Syed Ali Shah terming the government inquiry into the incident as a joke.
In a statement issued today, the Mirwaiz also called for peaceful protests on Monday to demand the withdrawal of troops and draconian laws.
The firing exposes Indian claims of peace having returned to Kashmir, the Mirwaiz said, strongly condemning the use of force and suppressive tactics on innocent and peaceful people at Pulwama.
The Mirwaiz said that the incident should teach the government of India that the sentiments and aspirations of the Kashmiri people cannot be be suppressed at gunpoint.
In his statement, Geelani termed the Pulwama firing as state terrorism, and the government forces as trigger-happy.
The magisterial inquiry ordered into the firing is a joke. It is a ploy to deceive the masses and pacify their anger, he said.
The state administration is not in a position to inquire into the incident as there is no denying the fact that no member of the armed forces can be prosecuted because of the AFSPA, he said. With inputs from KNS
