SRINAGAR: Government is contemplating to extend pension benefits of Rs. 1500 per month to registered construction workers after attaining 60 years of age so that the worker does not face any financial constraints in old age and would live a dignified life.
This was stated by Minister for Labour, Employment and Higher Education, Mr. Abdul Gani Malik while addressing an impressive function at Government College of Education, M.A. Road here today.
The function was organized by J&K Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB) for distribution of financial assistance of Rs. 45 lakh among 399 registered construction workers of Srinagar district.
The function was among others attended by Chief Executive Officer and Secretary, JKBOCWWB, Syed Muried Hussain, Principal, Government College of Education, Prof. Parveen Pandit, Assistant Labour Commissioner, Srinagar, Mr. Gulzar Ahmad Khan and officers of Labour and Employment Departments.
The Minister further said that awareness programmes on schemes provided under JKBOCWWB should be organized in length and breadth of the State so that the people in general are acquainted with the benefits of these schemes.
Giving details of the activities of JKBOCWWB, Mr. Malik said that till date 1.40 lakh construction workers have been registered while as Rs. 200 crore have been collected as Cess by the Board. He said that Rs. 17 crore have been disbursed among the children of construction workers as scholarship while as Rs. One lakh each has been provided as financial assistance to 50 families of construction workers who died after their registration with the Board. Similarly, Rs. 2.50 lakh have been expended as Marriage Money of registered construction workers.
Directing the officers to register the Drivers and Conductors connected with construction work, the Minister asked them to prioritize the persons working in stone crushers, cement factories, steel factories and other vital institutions related to strenuous labour.
Lauding the role of construction workers, the Minister said that the State Government is committed to uplift the labour class and provide all possible assistance to them so that their families become educated, prosperous and live a life of dignity and honour.
On this occasion, the Minister also released a Newsletter of Government Degree College, Bijbehara.
While expressing his gratitude to the Minister for releasing the Newsletter, the Principal of the College, Prof. Syed Mumtaz Ali assured the Minister that the College authorities will leave no stone unturned in providing quality education both academic as well as extra-curricular for making them excellent citizens of the State.
