JAMMU: The department of Legal Metrology booked a manufacturer of chocolate from Mumbai under the provisions of Weights and Measures Laws and Package commodities rules, who flooded the market with varieties of costly chocolates without mentioning the one of mandatory declarations i.e packing date on the pre-packed commodity of the said chocolate. More than 100 packages were seized from the market during inspections.
According to Deputy Controller, Legal Metrology Enforcement, the Packaged Commodity rules protects the consumers by providing mandatory declarations like MRP, PKD, Net Weight, complete address of Manufacturer, packer and consumer helpline number on all the commodities which are being packed in the absence of consumers.
In the said case also, the chocolates were packed with the statutory declaration to consume the said chocolates within 3 months from the date of packing but the date was not marked thereby giving opportunity to the trader to sell the same at any time period.
The department scrutinized the bills and found that there was more than 100 % margins to the trader as per marked MRP and price billed to the trader, accordingly Inspector Jammu (upper) Ms Pooja Kumari directed M/s Jindal, the manufacturer to reduce the margin of profit of trader in the interest of consumers and all the deceptive packages were recalled from market for necessary rectification for the benefit of consumers and a sum of Rs 10,000/- was imposed & recovered as a composition from the defaulter.
