On Pak Visit Eve, Mirwaiz Asserts Representative Character

SRINAGAR: Wrapping up consultations ahead of its Pakistan visit later this week, the Hurriyat (M) on Wednesday said it was embarking on an “extremely important diplomatic mission, being fully conscious of our representative character.”

“As the representative of the sentiments and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people, the Hurriyat Conference has to play a positive role today when world issues are being sought to be resolved in their historical perspective, and India, Pakistan and the Kashmiri leadership have global support and cooperation in resolving the long-standing Kashmir issue,” the Hurriyat (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, said at a roundtable with delegates from Gandarbal and Budgam.

This, he said, was necessary for the leadership of the primary party in order to find a permanent and just solution on the basis of the right of self-determination.

“The Hurriyat Conference is going to Pakistan with an open mind and fully conscious of its representative character, and will talk not only to the government but also to the opposition, the media and leading figures,” he said.

“We want to talk to Pakistan – which has been extending diplomatic, political and moral support to the Kashmir cause at the international level – in the perspective of the new and changing geo-political scenario and Islamabad’s current peaceful dialogue with New Delhi, so that an effective strategy that can lead to the resolution of the Kashmir issue is adopted,” he said.

“Kashmir is not a bilateral issue. It cannot be resolved by India-Pakistan, Kashmir-India, or Kashmir-Pakistan engagement,” he said.

“Each party has its own importance in the issue, but Kashmiris are the primary party,” he said.

“The Hurriyat Conference wants a solution that is in accordance with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people and acceptable to the other parties,” he said.

According to a Hurriyat (M) statement, invited delegates unanimously said that it had been recognised by the world as the voice and representative of the Kashmiri people

“The invitation by Pakistan to the real representatives of Kashmiris for a direct exchange of views is a matter of pride for us,” the Hurriyat (M) quoted the delegates as having said.

“And it is also a highly propitious step, because Pakistan wishes us well, and has fought three wars with India over our right of self-determination,” the delegates were quoted as having said.

“It did not lose heart even after suffering division, but continued its support of the Kashmir struggle at every level,” they said.

“Though it is our own movement, as proved in the peaceful mass upsurge of 2008 to 2009, the international support our struggle has received is indebted to the sacrifices of Pakistan,” they said

“People who are in distress and doubt at the Hurriyat’s visit to Pakistan should bear in mind that the leadership is not going for a sightseeing or sell-out, but at the invitation from a country that is our benefactor, and for exhaustive talks with its government,” they said.
