SMC for strict, sustained anti-polythene drive

‘Anyone carrying polythene bags will be fined’

SRINAGAR (KNS) – The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to intensify its campaign against polythene in the city in a sustained manner to make Srinagar a polythen free city.

Commissioner, SMC, Dr G N Qasba today directed officials of the corporation to launch a sustained anti-polythene drive across the city.

“No polythene shall be visible in the city I want to see polythene free city “said Dr Qasba during a meeting of Municipal Ward Officers here today.

“He directed the concerned officials to switch over to every possible mode of communication, both awareness and enforcement, and formulate a strategy through which SMC shall run an effective anti polythene awareness campaign among general public”, the Media Relations Officer of SMC told KNS.

According to the officer, the drive will take place from Monday to Saturdays every week and commissioner SMC will take stock of the week long drive every Saturdays.

During the meeting Dr Qasba passed instructions for designating the Building inspectors of all the wards Anti-polythene Officers in their concerned wards for carrying out an effective anti polythene drive in the city.

He directed the Ward Officers that Building inspectors designated as Anti polythene Officers shall ensure regular checks in the markets, conduct raids and surprise visits on daily basis.

Dr Qasba directed SMC’s Chief Sanitation Officer to go for surprise visits and take stock of the ongoing polythene drives along with the concerned Ward Officer regularly.

“Dr Qasba further directed the concerned officials to organize awareness camps at various entry points and request people travelling through all kinds of transport not to use polythene. He directed anti polythene workers of SMC, visible in SMC uniform, shall check pedestrians, passengers in buses, Autos, cars, scooters and ensure if anyone found carrying already banned polythene bags  shall be fined and the polythene would be destroyed on spot”.

The Commissioner SMC, according to the officer, will personally monitor the entire drive and will lead a rally/flag march that will be organized on  Saturdays’ with the students of various schools and colleges in which all the SMC officials from lower to higher level will be participating and creating proper awareness among the public about the adverse effects of polythene.

Meanwhile, the drive began today in all wards and around two hundred kg polythene was recovered from the shopkeepers, vendors, pedestrians etc, said the Media Relations Officer, Massarat Yousuf.

“The ward officer of ward  no 29, Gh Hassan Dar today launched a massive campaign in his ward through public address system and single handedly recovered 101 kg of polythene from Rambagh to Exibition under the supervision of Joint Commissioner Adminstration SMC Fayaz Ahmed Balla”, she said.
