SRINAGAR (ONS) – A panchayat member attacked irrigation department officials in a Shopian locality on Friday, leaving an assistant executive engineer severely injured.
The engineer, Nazir Ahmad Bhat, received ten stitches on his head after the panch struck him a heavy blow with a cane, reports said, adding that the attacker and his henchmen had gone absconding.
Bhat had tried to intervene when the panchayat leader, Abdul Rasheed Khan, and his associates assaulted and beat up a junior engineer and works supervisor who were a part of an official inspection team.
The three-member squad had arrived in Udipora where Khan was reportedly engaged in unauthorised NREGA work on an irrigation canal.
The panchayat member flew into a rage and assaulted the officials when they pointed out that he could not carry out the works on the canal without formal permission from the irrigation department.
Engineers and works supervisors held strong protests in Anantmag soon after the incident, demanding punishment to the panchayat leader.
The police said that it had registered a First Information Report (FIR) over the attack, and conducted a series of raids to nab Khan.
