SRINAGAR (KMN) – Jammu and Kashmir High Court Friday upheld the life imprisonment of Dr Muhammad Qasim Faktoo, Ameer-e-Ala of Muslim League. He has been in jail since 1992 and is serving life sentence awarded by the Supreme Court.
Dr Faktoo had been arrested in March 1992 in connection with the killing of P N Wanchoo and later the case was handed over the Central Bureau of Investigation.
After a 7-year protracted trial, the TADA Court had, on July 14, 2001, ordered his release. However, the CBI challenged the order in the Apex Court which sentenced him to life imprisonment.
On June 3, 2008, the state government set up a review committee comprising, among others, the then director-general, Prisons, and the then principal district and sessions judge, Srinagar, under the provisions of Jail Manual 2000 to consider Dr Faktoos release. After going through the relevant records, the committee had observed that Dr Faktoos premature release could be approved. However, he was not set free. He is lodged in the Central Jail, Srinagar.
Meanwhile, Dr Faktoo has been admitted in the SK Institute of Medical Sciences, a week ago for treatment.
