Two day food festival to start from Nov 17


SRINAGAR – Change (Recycling Kashmir), a group of professional people is organizing two day Kashur Khen-Chen (Kashmiri cuisine) food festival from November 17, at Preezo Island Park, Srinagar in which original food vendors will showcase traditional street foods of Kashmir.

The foods that are expected to be on display include Monje Guil (fried Vegetables), Monjee Gadee  (fried fish), Harisa, Barbeque, Kashmiri Pickles, traditional sweets, Kehwa (Kashmiri brew) and others.

“The vendors will install their preparatory cum sale stalls at the festival venue where people will come and enjoy these foods. Besides that festival will hold Kashmiri musical shows as well ,” said Aasif one of the founding member of the Change.

He said that food is one of the main components of culture in any society and street food culture has been main part of the Kashmiri society. But it is witnessing a decline particularly among youth due to increasing influence of fast foods.

“So our effort is to introduce these traditional street foods to them,” said Asif.

He said that street foods in Kashmir are not sold in hygienic conditions and festival will also try to apprise the authorities that steps need to be taken raise hygienic awareness among vendors.

“We have taken the permission from tourism department and municipal authorities to organize the festival and we are expecting the officials from these departments visiting the festival as well,” said Asif.

Change is the informal group of people including bankers, lawyers, engineers, journalists, doctors, academicians, entrepreneurs, students and others and its main objective is to address the issues related to health, socio economic and cultural environment of Kashmir.
