SRINAGAR (ONS) – After relatives and neighbours held angry protests, authorities on Saturday exhumed the body of a pregnant Pampore woman whose parents allege that she was murdered by in-laws for dowry.
Married two years ago to Ghulam Mustafa of Pampore, Kulsoom, hailing from Pulwama, had died at the SMHS Hospital here on October 9 when, according to her in-laws, she had been admitted for labour pain.
Her father said that his eight-months-pregnant daughter had been constantly harassed and tormented by her husbands family for dowry, and that her death at hospital was mysterious.
The Pampore police have tried to hush the case up by misplacing the FIR, and the autopsy report from doctors at the local hospital too is missing, Abdul Aziz said.
On the fateful day, her in-laws rang me up late at night, saying that Kulssom had been shifted to hospital for labour pain, he said. When I rushed to her house to inquire, I was first told that she was okay, and then moments later they said that she had passed away at hospital.
The in-laws had always harassed her, making new demands every day, he said. Even her husband subjected her to physical and mental torture.
One day he demanded that she bring Rs 2 lakh rupees from her parents so that he could secure a government job. I fulfilled that demand also by selling off my land, but the ill-treatment did not stop, nor did the demands, he said.
