MIRZAPUR - Uttar Pradesh is soon going to have its first "restaurant" for vultures, a scavenger that eats dead and decaying matter, here.
The concept, the first of its kind in the state, would enable farmers to supply the carcasses of animals in this "restaurant" that would allow the scavenging birds to have a meal without much hunt, forest department sources said.
The "restaurant" would provide a source of income for farmers, who will get Rs 500 per carcass.
According to Kaimoor and Mahavir wildlife sanctuary forest officer Sushil Sharma, the vultures restaurant would also come as a pollution control measure.
A number of steps were being taken to protect the declining population of vultures. The department has put a restriction on the use of chemical diclofenac that causes acute kidney failure in vultures when they eat the animal carcasses that has recently been treated with it, he added.
In UP, the vultures are mainly found in Mahavir Swami Wildlife sanctuary in Kaimoor area. A total of 300 vultures are estimated to reside in the sanctuary. Mr Sharma said such "restaurants" would be opened in four places and allow the scavenging birds of nearby villages to have meal.
