Srinagar, Nov 01: Disclosing that the state government had referred no case to the investigating agency for the past two years, a top CBI officer in J&K on Thursday said that key witnesses in the infamous Srinagar sex scandal case might have been influenced to change their statements.
The witnesses had given a different statement before the sessions judge, and then they changed their stand and gave a contradictory statement before the trial court in Chandigarh indicating that some key witnesses in the sex scandal case might be influenced allegedly by the influential persons who were involved in the case, Superintendent of the Police in the CBIs J&K branch, Armandeep Singh, told journalists in Jammu.
I cannot say with authority that the key witnesses in the cases were influenced or not but something has happened due to which the case was dissolved and the accused were acquitted, the CBI officer said.
The possibility is always there. That is for the court to decide. Somewhere the witnesses might have turned hostile. I wont be able to say this, said when pressed for details.
On being asked whether the witnesses were protected, the CBI officer said: There is no policy to protect witnesses in India like western countries to prevent them from changing statements. Observer News Service
