Jammu: An organisation of Gujjars on Sunday demanded setting up of a separate department for Gojri language at Jammu University.
“In 2008, a decision in this regard was taken in the Council meeting in the presence of state governor, who is also the Chancellor of Jammu university, but since then the issue has been ignored by concerned authorities,” Secretary, Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation, Javed Rahi said in Jammu.
“University authorities have deliberately ignored the issue, which aims at promoting Gojri language,” he said.
Rahi said the ‘Gojri’ speaking community which constitutes 20 to 25 percent of the state’s population has been demanding the establishment of “Gojri department” on the pattern of ‘Dogri’ and ‘Kashmiri’ departments in the universities.
“We demand immediate steps to step up a separate department for Gojri at Jammu University,” he said. (Agencies)
