Polls No Substitute For UN Mandated Plebiscite: Geelani

Srinagar – Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani Tuesday pooh-poohed Indian external affairs minister, S M Krishna’s statement in which he had said Jammu and Kashmir was an integral part of India and that “the people of the state have already chosen their destiny repeatedly through India’s well-established democratic processes.”

Terming Krishna’s statement as a pack of lies, Geelani said that several UN resolutions had made it abundantly clear that any elections held in Jammu and Kashmir would in no way be a substitute to plebiscite as promised to the people. “The elections held in the past are specifically for running the administrative affairs of the state while its political future is to be determined through a plebiscite held under UN auspices,” he said.

Geelani described Krishna’s statement as “unrealistic” and “ridiculous” saying Kashmir dispute had been acknowledged as such by the international community and the future of undivided state separated by the Line of Control had yet to be decided. “With seven and a half lakh strong army and one and one lakh paramilitary forces and police deployed in the state, the elections held so far had no credibility, while the conduct of these elections too has invariably been a military exercise in which political parties seek vote for running the administrative affairs of the state,” he added.
