Former Militant Slaughtered Her To Claim Compensation: Police
Srinagar: Police have arrested Muhammad Shafi Malik of Tikkar, a village near the border town of Kupwara, allegedly for slaughtering his own 7-year old school-going daughter, Isra Shafi, last year.
Claiming the breakthrough in the sensational murder which had shocked the entire area, police claimed Malik, a former militant, had confessed to the crime allegedly to earn compassionate relief from the government.
Quoting sources, reports said the heinous crime had taken place in the village on March 26 last year after which the police had registered a case vide FIR No 62/2011. The incident had shocked the entire area with the agitated people holding a sit-in on the Kupwara-Chowkibal road and obstructing movement of vehicular traffic.
The then deputy commissioner, Muhammad Shafi Rather, and senior administration and police officials had rushed to the spot and assured the protesters of bringing the culprits to justice. The armys help had also been sought to track down the killer.
Reports said the ill-fated girl had come down from her house at around 8 p.m. and gone to her grandfathers house to fetch some vegetables. When she did not return in about 20 minutes, her father and grandfather came out calling her. However, she could not be traced.
Meanwhile, on learning about the disappearance the villagers had also rushed to Maliks house. It was only after n9 p.m. that Isras body was found lying in a pool of blood near the wall of local middle school. Her throat had been slit with some sharp edged object. Soon after police took the body into its custody and got a post-mortem conducted at the district hospital by a team of doctors comprising Dr Muhammad Maqbool, Dr Parvez, Dr Afzal and Dr Zia.
Quoting the deputy superintendent of police, Sajjad Khaliq, reports said a special investigation team had been set up which conducted the process at various levels and eventually the needle of suspicion pointed towards the victims father. During interrogation, Malik confessed to the crime saying he had murdered his daughter to claim compensation from the government, the official said, adding Muhammad Shafi was a former militant and had even contested the panchayat elections in 2010. He alleged Malik had hatched the conspiracy to kill his daughter to claim the compensation given to the sarpanches and panches or their kin coming under attack. (KNS)
