Cold Wave On, Weather to Improve Today

SRINAGAR - Cold wave conditions prevailed in the Kashmir valley, where upper reaches experienced moderate to heavy snowfall during the past two days. However, the weather will improve though the sky will remain partly cloudy during the next 24 hours in the valley, where ski resort of Gulmarg and health resort Pahalgam recorded below freezing temperature.

A Met department spokesman said here Friday afternoon that weather will remain dry over the state during the next 24 hours.

There would be no large change on subsequent two days, he said adding the temperature will, however, remain below normal.

Due to fresh snowfall on the upper reaches, the cold wave conditions intensified in the valley with maximum going several degrees below normal.

He said Gulmarg and nearby heights, where moderate to heavy snowfall was recorded, there was considerable drop in the minimum temperature.

Against minus 4.5 degree, the minimum temperature dropped to minus 7 degree. However, the lowest so far recorded at Gulmarg was minus 7.5 degree on November 28. Pahalgam recorded coldest night of the season after the minimum dipped to minus 5.2 degree after moderate snowfall. However, the upper reaches had heavy snowfall.

The Met official said the maximum in capital, Srinagar, was six degree below normal yesterday, while the minimum was up by four notches.

He said the sky will remain partly cloudy tomorrow (Saturday) when the maximum and minimum will be near normal.

People in Ladakh region continued to shiver because of below freezing temperature. He said the minimum temperature at Leh was minus 8.2 degree while Kargil, a border town on Srinagar-Leh national highway recorded minus 5.6 degree. Agencies
